  5. Make your decision

1. Compare systems, not just names

Slatwall uses horizontal channels; pegboard uses a repeated pattern of holes, sometimes combined with slots. Both let you rearrange suitable accessories. Material, panel size, mounting requirements, and accessory design vary between products. A hardboard sheet, a steel pegboard kit, and a PVC slatwall kit should not be treated as equivalent purchases.

For example, Home Depot Canada lists a Metrie nominal ¼-inch, 4 × 8-foot hardboard pegboard. Its listing names availability in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. That is a regional listing, not evidence of stock at your nearest store.

2. Match the setup to your belongings

This table is a shopping framework, not a load-rating comparison. Price each candidate against the same list of belongings and approximately the same usable wall area.

3. Canadian price examples: what the price includes

Proslat Canada’s white Original PVC Slatwall, 4 × 8 feet, displayed a sale price of C$209.99 and regular price of C$239.99 when checked on October 4, 2026. Its stated coverage is 32 square feet, and the package lists panels, trims, mounting hardware, and instructions. Storage hooks and baskets are not listed in that package. Confirm tax, delivery, colour pricing, and current availability before purchase.

That works out to about C$6.56 per square foot for the listed package (209.99 ÷ 32), before any additional accessories, tax, delivery, or installation. It is not the cost of a finished tool wall.

The Metrie pegboard listing did not display a verifiable price during our check. We therefore do not publish a guessed price or claim a precise saving. Obtain a local quote for the sheet and its required supports and hooks. A panel-only quote cannot be fairly compared with a kit until you account for what each includes.

Your comparison worksheet

Complete cost = panels + accessories + required mounting materials + delivery + applicable tax + installation, if needed. Enter actual quotes for both options before choosing.

4. Check compatibility and installation first

Proslat describes its Original PVC panels as intended for its own accessories and says the Original panels do not interlock with PROCORE. Its listed mounting specification uses 16-inch stud centres. These are details for this particular product, not universal slatwall rules. Check its current specifications and instructions.

For a different example, Wall Control’s manufacturer FAQ says its combination panels accept conventional ¼-inch round pegboard hooks as well as its own slotted accessories. That does not make all proprietary slotted hooks compatible with a plain hardboard panel. Match the panel and accessory specifications before ordering.

Follow the selected manufacturer’s requirements for backing, clearance, fasteners, and loads. Do not turn a panel’s advertised capacity into an assumption about your wall or a single hook. This guide does not assess the structure of your garage. Ask an appropriately qualified installer where the mounting conditions are uncertain.

5. Which should you choose?

Compare pegboard first if your project is a compact collection of hand tools and a panel-and-hook arrangement meets your needs. Confirm the complete local quote and the product’s limits before treating it as the budget choice.

Compare slatwall first if you want a coordinated wall with several kinds of accessories and you are comfortable buying into a particular compatible system. List the actual baskets, shelves, and holders you need so that the panel price does not hide the rest of the cost.

Consider a mixed layout if your workbench needs small-tool organization while another part of the garage needs shelves or bulk storage. You do not have to cover every wall with the same product. Start with one useful area, try its daily routine, and expand only when there is a clear need.
